Top Tips for Throwing a Mer-Mazing Mermaid Party

Since the announcement that a certain red-haired mermaid will be returning to our screens this May, our mermaid parties have become more popular than ever before! With this in mind, we want to share our top tips for throwing the most epic ‘under the sea’ party of the year.

Mermaid-Themed Invitations

Make a splash before the party has even started with some beautiful ‘under the sea’ themed invitations. This is your chance to get creative and establish the colour palette, décor, and overall theme of the party! There are plenty of available templates online – how magical are these DIY sparkly shells?! Don’t forget to give your guests at least 2 weeks to RSVP, and include the venue address and mermaid dress code.

Deep Sea Snacks

No party is complete without delicious, fun, and creative food. There are so many possibilities for fin-tastic mermaid-themed treats that we have compiled a separate list of 10 magical food ideas for your mermaid party.

sand castle birthday cake for mermaid-themed party

Of course, the pinnacle of all party foods is the birthday cake. Whilst we are certainly no Mary Berry, we have seen (and eaten!) dozens of beautiful mermaid cakes over the years. You could create a simple yet effective sandcastle cake, using crushed biscuits to mimic sand and ice cream cones for the turrets. But if this all sounds a little over-whale-ming, you can always turn to your local bakery or cake shop!

Mermaid Backdrop

Transform your venue into an underwater paradise with a mermaid backdrop. This is a great way to incorporate your theme and provides a space to take gorgeous photos for you to treasure forever.

jellyfish paper decorations for mermaid party

Why not get the kids involved in the party prep and craft some DIY jellyfish decorations? All you need is coloured card, scissors, string, a glue stick, sticky tape, colour pens, pencils and glitter (optional).

Get the mermaid look

Mermaid makeup for party

Transform your little one into a real-life mermaid princess on their special day! A fun and simple way to do this is by holding fishnet tights against their face before applying face paint, to create a scaly effect. You could finish the look off by adding cosmetic glitter and a few gems; they will be true mermaid royalty!

Want to take the mermaid look one step further? Create the colourful mermaid hair of dreams by purchasing temporary hair chalk or these pretty hair clips from Claires.

Aquatic Adventures

party games for mermaid themed party

Entertaining a group of children for hours is certainly no easy task, so engaging and on-theme party games are super important. Put an aquatic spin on a classic party game with pin the tail on the mermaid! Each guest will be blindfolded and take turns to pin the tail as close to the correct spot as possible!

Hosting an outdoor party? Create a pirate treasure hunt! Hide gold coins around the venue and give the children clues to find them along the way. You could also hide a treasure chest full of treats somewhere for everyone to enjoy at the end!

Swap the Party Bag for a Treasure Box

Party favours are a staple of any birthday party and are an excellent way to keep the fun going even after the event has ended! Stay on theme by swapping the traditional party bag with a treasure box full of goodies. Simply find a template online and assemble the box out of card (which is also more environmentally friendly than typical plastic party bags). Fill with mermaid stickers, pencils, a notepad, temporary glitter tattoos, slime, chocolate coins, or other exciting treats.

Hire a Mermaid Entertainer

10 Magical Food Ideas for your Mermaid-Themed Party!

Ready to throw the most epic under-the-sea party of the year? These mermaid-themed food ideas are certain to make a splash with all the guests!

Clam-Shell Cookies

These deep-sea snacks are sure to leave a sweet taste in the mouths of your guests, and they are super simple to make!

  1. Purchase a box of plain cookies, or bake them yourself by following a basic recipe online.
  1. Create your buttercream icing by beating icing sugar, butter, and vanilla extract until light and fluffy.
  1. Separate your buttercream into three separate bowls and add food colouring. We recommend purple, pink and blue for that true mermaid aesthetic!
  1. Pipe the buttercream onto the underside of one cookie, and sandwich another on top. Finish your clams by adding a small, round sweet (yoghurt-covered raisins are a great choice but feel free to get creative!) in the middle to mimic a pearl.

Ocean Water Punch

There is perhaps nothing that screams ‘mermaid party’ more than a bright ocean-coloured drink! This novel idea is sure to be a hit with younger guests, and you only need three ingredients:

  1. Pineapple Juice
  1. Blue Food Colouring
  1. Lemon and Lime Soft Drink, e.g. Sprite

If you want to make an adult version of this drink, consider adding Malibu!

Blue Jelly in Sand

Who doesn’t love jelly?! Mermify this birthday party staple by making it ocean blue. If you can’t find any blue jelly in the supermarket, use some of the blue food colouring left over from your clam-shell cookies and ocean water punch. Pour into small, shot-sized plastic cups, and leave in the fridge overnight to set. Finish by placing the jelly cups on a bed of crushed biscuits or brown sugar, to mimic sand.

Fruit Crabs

For a healthier treat, try creating these adorable fruit crabs!

  1. Peel an orange and divide it into segments.
  1. Cut the orange peel with a knife or scissors, to make the crab’s legs.
  1. Poke a grape or a blueberry through a cocktail stick and insert it into the orange segment to create an eye. Repeat this step for the other eye.

And that’s it! Healthy food has never looked so cute!

Starfish Sandwiches

Sandwiches are a must at any party, so why not make them fit the theme by simply cutting them into the shape of starfish?! You will be the star of the show after your guests try these fun, tasty snacks!

You could also try making mini starfish pizzas in the same way!

Mermaid Snack Mix

Snack tubs are always a hit, and are super easy to prepare. Combine popcorn, goldfish crackers, jelly sharks, blue M&Ms, chocolate coins, and sprinkles. Serve in small individual containers.

Shark Snack Cup

Your party guests will be ravenous for these shark snack cups!

All you need is:

1. Little yoghurt pots/cups

2) Vanilla yoghurt with a drop of blue food colouring.

3) Shark jelly sweets.

4) Crushed biscuits (to mimic sand).

You can finish these fin-tastic treats by adding a cocktail umbrella!

Mermaid Rice Krispie Treats

These gorgeous mermaid Rice Krispie treats are perfect for your under-the-sea party, and they involve no baking whatsoever!

  1. Buy a box of Rice Krispie squares, or make them yourself if you have more time on your hands. You can do this by combining butter, marshmallows, and Rice Krispies in a saucepan. Mix well, then place the mixture in a lined baking tray. Put the tray in the fridge and leave for 2-3 hours to set, and then cut it into squares.
  1. Melt some white chocolate in the microwave and add blue food colouring. Alternatively, you could use Wilton Turquoise Candy Melts.
  1. Dip the Rice Krispie squares into the chocolate, but only halfway. This creates the look of the ocean against the sand!
  1. Now for the fun part: the decorations! This is your chance to get creative – sweets, sprinkles… you decide. Put your creations back in the fridge to set, and after a few more hours they will finally be party ready!

Seaweed

There are two different options for creating these sweet seaweed treats. You could buy some sour lace sweets, or, for a healthier option, grape skewers also create that under-the-sea effect. Seaweed has never looked quite so appetising!

The Icing on the Cake

The Best Singing Princess in Hampshire!

Ariel from the Little Mermaid, Princess Anna of Hampshire

Music has always been a core part of Princess Anna’s life; from starring in musical theatre shows throughout high school and university, to performing and releasing music as a solo singer-songwriter, singing and performing on stage has always been her absolute dream.

Singing + Entertaining = Princess Anna’s Dream Job

When she started working as a children’s entertainer in 2017, she was able to combine her passion for singing with her love of fairy tales and Princess films to create her absolute dream job! Then in 2022, Princess Anna became Snow Princess Parties’ Director of Hampshire, and began to build her own little kingdom alongside her fellow princesses!

Anna has created magical memories for hundreds of children on their special days over the years. One of her favourite parts of the job is still the moments when she gets to sing to them as their favourite fairy tale character! She simply adores hearing children singing back to their favourite songs and dancing along with her, whether she is a mermaid wishing to be part of the human world, or a Snow Queen letting go!

Stunning reviews

It’s such a magical moment when party guests realise that it’s actually Princess Anna singing live and not miming! Hearing compliments always fills her heart with joy, such as this snippet from one of her most treasured customer reviews:

“Anna is also an outstanding singer and executed all of the high notes perfectly whilst singing “Let It Go” whilst engaging the children as they joined in. All too often I have been to parties where Queen Elsa cannot sing well or at all, but Anna impressed everyone with her musical talents.”

Want to hire the singing princess in Hampshire?

If you live in Hampshire and would love for your child to hear their favourite Princess singing to them on their birthday as part of our action-packed and fun-filled party packages, please contact Princess Anna today by emailing her at anna@snowprincess.co.uk or filling out our booking enquiry form.

How to make a Princess Doll Cake

Your little ones birthday is coming up and not only do they want their favourite princess to be there, they also want a cake that looks just like them! Over the years we have been to so many birthday parties and seen (and eaten) lots of birthday cakes; but one particular style of cake we always love to see (and our Princess Heather even had for her 21st birthday) is a Princess Doll Cake – so simple and elegant, but yet so effective and easy to make yourself!

Read on if you’d like to give it a try…

1. What You Need

  • 2 Boxes of Cake Mixture (any flavour)
  • Ready to Roll Icing (in the colour of the princess dress you would like)
  • A Doll Pick (found on Amazon)
  • 2 Round Cake Tins
  • 1 Large Domed Mug or Heatproof Bowl

2. Making The Dress Base

Firstly you want to make two sponge cakes to form the base of the dress. Before starting this section, read the cake mixture boxes and gather the ingredients required (eggs or alternative, oil, water etc) to create the mixture. Preheat your oven to the desired temperature at this point.

  1. Following the instructions on the box, prepare and mix your two cake boxes of cake mixture together (adding eggs or alternative, water and oil as per the cake mix box directions)
  2. Once the cake mixture is mixed, grease/butter your pans and lightly dust with some flour to prevent your cakes from sticking.
  3. Spread the batter evenly over both cake tins (if you have excess batter why not make some cupcakes for your guests?)
  4. Pop your cake tins (and cupcakes) into the oven for the allocated period of time stated on your cake mix boxes!

3. Making The Top of the Cake

Whilst waiting for the two cakes to bake it is time to create the top of the ballgown. For this we made a microwave mug cake in a bowl to create the round top of the dress. This mug/bowl should be slightly smaller than your cake tins.

To make the perfect microwave mug cake why not follow this recipe from BBC Good Food.

4. Putting The Cakes Together

  1. When the cakes are baked, remove them from the oven and leave them to cool for 10-15 minutes before removing them from their tins/bowls and then place onto a wire cooling rack to allow the cakes to finish cooling.
  2. Once cooled, place frosting/filling between each layer of cake and stack them, keeping the round mug cake on the top to round off the top of the dress.
  3. At this point you can use a flat knife to round off the edges of the cake to form one big ballgown.

5. Decorating Your Cake

Now it’s time for the most exciting part, bringing your cake all together and creating the princess that your little one desires! Make sure the cakes are completely cooled to avoid the decorations ‘sweating’ off and gather everything you need to decorate.

  1. Roll out your ‘Ready to Roll’ icing ensuring it is not too thin to prevent any tearing.
  2. Carefully lift and place the sheet of icing over your domed cake shape to create the perfect ballgown – if you want to add some patterns flowers/butterflies/patterns then it is a great idea to get two different coloured icing rolls.
  3. Poke your Doll Pick into the top of the cake. It is a great idea to use some remaining roll out icing to create the bodice of the dress on your princess.
  4. Style your princesses hair and add any final decorations onto the dress that you desire and ta da…there is your perfect princess cake!

Present your cake onto a cake stand and, for an extra special touch, we placed cupcakes around the cake decorated in complimentary colours for everyone to enjoy.

We hope your cake is a big hit with your little guests!

Top Tips for throwing a Vegan-Friendly Children’s Birthday Party

Whether it’s for the animals, for your health or for the environment, having a vegan lifestyle is now more popular than ever, so it makes sense that you would want your little one’s birthday party to also align with your values. If you’ve not thrown a vegan party before, you may be wondering where to start, so we’ve put together some ideas below to help.

1. Party Food

Any food you can think of can be made vegan so there’s no need to worry. First make a list of what party food you want, then research whether there is a plant-based version readily available or if you need to get the ingredients and make it yourself.

There are lots of ‘accidently’ vegan products, you just need to check the label. Not all items will have vegan written on them so it may require a quick scan of the ingredients list (watch out for things like milk, egg, whey, gelatin, carmine, beeswax, honey and lanolin). Some suggestions for easy party food include sandwiches (with Quorn ham slices and Flora margarine), houmous with vegetable sticks, pizza (you can get vegan options from many places such as Pizza Hut, Pizza Express, Dominoes, Papa Johns, Chicago Town frozen and White Rabbit frozen), Party Rings, Oreos, Jammie Dodgers, Hartley’s Jelly and Swedish Glace ice-cream. Check out the plant-based section at your supermarket for loads of options such as cocktail sausages, sausage rolls, ‘chicken’ nuggets and much more.

2. The Cake

The birthday cake is often the centrepiece of celebrations, so if you’re hiring a cake maker then ask if they offer vegan options (most do). The great thing about vegan cake is that you are covered for kids and parents that may have dairy or egg allergies or intolerances too. Those who are vegetarian or halal can also relax.

If a bespoke cake is out of your budget, then you can buy a great option off the shelf (such as OGGS or Asda) or make one yourself (just look up vegan cake recipes). Remember that you could do cupcakes instead of one big cake.

3. Goody Bags

Veganism is also about caring for the planet so you probably want the party to be as eco-friendly as possible. Avoid plastic as much as possible – recyclable cardboard goody boxes are a good alternative. If you’re adding sweeties then you can buy vegan pick and mix, vegan fudge or vegan chocolate. Skittles, Jelly Tots and Love Hearts are all suitable.

4. Decorations

Make sure that your décor is also sustainable such as biodegradable balloons and fabric bunting. Ensure that candles aren’t made from beeswax (most party candles are made from soy or paraffin wax anyway).

5. Entertainers

A party needs entertainment! Snow Princess Parties have an array of fabulous characters to run action-packed games. Many of our directors and entertainers are vegan themselves.

6. Party Outfit

It’s more than likely that your little one will be dressed as their favourite princess or superhero for their party! If you’re looking for an outfit for yourself then make sure to avoid wool, fur, feathers and leather. Time for party make-up or face painting? Make sure it’s cruelty-free so hasn’t been tested on animals.

The Perfect Vegan Party

If you are based in South East England and need more inspiration, why not attend an event run by Sparkle Vegan Events? They showcase amazing caterers, bakers and small businesses with lovely eco-friendly creations; and their team would be happy to give advice.
